It’s hard to workout when you have nothing to wear

One of my biggest problems (also known as excuses) for not wanting to work out while trying to lose weight has been… “what the heck do I wear?”  If you read my blog What it Feels Like to be Fat and know that water balloon feeling all too well, then you know that the loose, baggy clothing makes us feel safe and well-hidden when we’re extremely overweight but it does NOT help with the water-balloon effect…AT ALL!  In fact, it only makes it worse!

When you’re carrying around a significant amount of extra weight, the last thing you want to do is exacerbate that jiggly feeling by bouncing up and down on a treadmill, in an aerobics class or even just taking a walk in your neighborhood.  Not to mention chafing!  Oh dear god, the chafing!  Avoid it at all costs!  This often leads to giving up all together, further perpetuating the cycle of being fat.  BUT!  It doesn’t have to be that way!

If you’re like me, you’ve gone to one…or many of the big box stores and tried on their workout gear only to leave disappointed and frustrated.  Some don’t have plus sized stuff at all and others have it, but their idea of compression pants provide less support than a pair of ill-fitting panty hose!  What the crap?!  You’re left with no other choice but to resort back to your baggy pants or saggy shorts that ride up between your legs farther and farther with each step until you get so sick of tugging at them that you just quit, right?  That’s what I thought, too!  Until….

Plus Sized Workout Wear Solution

Until I found this company… Aero Tech Designs.  After extensive web searching I finally found a company that offered REAL workout gear that went past a size XL.

My first purchase was a pair of padded bike pants that I bought because I was biking five miles per day and my butt needed a little extra cushion.  Yes, I know that’s hard to believe since I was, at the time wearing a size 28 in pants, but it’s true!   That little seat and my big butt did not get along—the padded pants were the perfect choice.  I ordered them online (size 4x) and received them within just a couple of days.   I immediately put them on to be sure they fit…they were perfect! (Of course it felt like I was wearing a diaper because of all the padding, but my next bike ride was much more pleasant!)  They went on easy and made me feel “tight”.  My butt and legs didn’t jiggle like they did in loose fitting clothes.  I wouldn’t say they were flattering…I mean, I wouldn’t wear them in public without something over them but they did do a good job of smoothing my lumps and bumps and when worn under a pair of lose yoga-type pants which allowed me to confident while riding my bike…in public!

My next purchase was three pairs of compression, non-padded, capris.  At first I didn’t wear them alone because I didn’t feel confident enough to show off that MUCH of me but wearing them with those lose-fitting yoga-style pants was perfect!  They provided enough support for me to be able to jog on the treadmill without feeling like my fat was flying everywhere.  They were the perfect solution!  As the weight started coming off and my yoga-style pants got too big, I braved up and began wearing the compression pants alone with a long shirt.  No chafing, no bulky material, just smooth, comfortable workout-wear!

When summer came, I got a pair of non-padded bike shorts to wear over my one-piece bathing suit and they worked great, too!  I even felt a little sporty when I wore the two together!  The shorts provided the coverage I needed to due to modesty (AKA cellulite) and the support I needed even in the pool where buoyancy can definitely be an issue!  I wore them for water aerobics and swimming laps and the material did not fade or degrade at all!  In-fact, I have since given them to a friend who loves them for the same reasons!

This year, as I begin training for my triathlon sprint in 2013 I will be purchasing my fancy shmancy gear from them as well.  The products are so well made, the prices are extremely reasonable and their customer service is top-notch!  Plus it’s all made in the USA.  Whoop, whoop!

If finding something to wear to in order to get moving is one of your excuses that keeps you from doing it, or if you’re just looking for a better way to dress while moving then I urge you to take a look at Aero Tech Designs.  Their products are well-made, durable, comfortable and affordable.  Even if you only get one pair for now, they’ll hold up to frequent washes and will be one of the best investments for your health!

Promise!
